On this occasion, Dior unveiled an exceptional gem, a yellow diamond named “Le Montaigne” of 150 carats discovered in 2020 in the Kimberley mine in South Africa. The House wanted the stone, once cut, to weigh exactly 88.88 carats to echo the lucky number of Mr. Christian Dior. It took almost nine months to study, imagine and cut this stone to the nearest tenth of a carat.
Indeed, the star and the number 8 are the lucky charms of the founder of the House. On October 8, 1946, the House of Dior opened its doors in a private mansion on Avenue Montaigne in the eighth arrondissement. Coincidence or not, the mansion has eight floors and eight workshops. It was here that Christian Dior created the line in eight, the first haute couture collection of the House more commonly known as “New Look“.
“Le Montaigne” is on display at 30-32 Avenue Montaigne as part of a new space dedicated to fine jewelry, where clients can make their own custom pieces. Victoire de Castellane, Dior’s Artistic Director of Jewelry, has already imagined the double ring on which the yellow diamond will be mounted. According to the Financial Times, its value is estimated at $50 million.
