It’s been a long wait! The expansion of Tiffany & Co’s 11-story flagship store at 727 Fifth Avenue in Midtown, Manhattan, is nearing completion. After a four-year renovation, the jewelry store will reopen to the public on April 28.

 

Overseen by Tiffany’s previous management team and then by teams from LVMH, which bought the American company in January 2021, the refurbishment is one of the largest investments ever made by the luxury holding company.

 

What was designated as “the New York flagship” is renamed “The Landmark”. This change of name is intended to avoid confusion with other flagships of the brand, including those in Tokyo and Los Angeles.

 

XXL renovations

 

Begun in spring 2019, the renovation project was intended to expand the luxury jewelry store.

 

 

The project included the construction of a three-story glass-clad extension on the 72-year-old building, as well as the renovation of its interiors and Art Moderne-style façade. The architectural design was by Peter Marino, and the glass extension was designed by Shohei Shigematsu and Jake Forster, partners in the architecture firm OMA.

 

The new section consists of 49 glass panels, three sliding doors, two single-wing glass floors on the eighth floor, and 69 tempered glass panels on the tenth and eleventh floors. A wrap-around terrace, surrounded by shrubs, will serve as an exhibition and event space.

 

Mythical place

 

Founded in the United States in 1837, Tiffany has more than 300 boutiques worldwide. In 2019, then-boss Alessandro Bogliolo estimated that the brand made about 10% of its global sales in its store on Fifth Avenue.

 

Famous for being the setting of the book and then the film Breakfast At Tiffany’s, released in 1961, the store on Fifth Avenue was created in 1940, and the jeweler acquired the walls in 1963. During the renovation, the brand offered its jewelry in an adjacent building, called “The Tiffany Flagship Next Door”. The move of the 114,179 “units of merchandise” (the expression used by the jeweler to designate its jewelry) had mobilized dozens of security guards and New York police officers, responsible for monitoring the transfer!

 

 

The store has become legendary, attracting such high-end customers as American presidents John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Today, tourists as well as a very high-end clientele still come to acquire jewelry ranging from affordable luxury to the most precious.
