According to a survey by the European Travel Commission (ETC), 50% of respondents from countries such as the United States, China, Brazil, Australia and Canada want to travel to Europe for their summer vacations.

It’s clear that Europe and its iconic capitals continue to attract tourists from the four corners of the globe. Indeed, the old continent attracts more and more travelers every year, and remains the top choice for long-haul trips, over the May to August period this year.

For 32% of respondents, their own country will be their next choice on the list for summer vacations, mainly for economic reasons.

Chinese and Brazilian tourists conquer Europe

Chinese and Brazilians top the list of foreigners keen to discover the wonders of Europe, whether in the mountains, in the city or by the sea. 73% of Chinese nationals want to visit the old continent, compared to 52% of Brazilians.

For English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada and the USA, the sense of escape is similar, with 38%, 37% and 36% respectively. According to travel insurance provider Allianz Parners, the number of Americans wanting to discover Europe this summer is set to soar by 55%, compared to last year’s figures, which were already 600% higher than those for 2021.

The Japanese have the lowest travel intention, with only 26% of respondents planning to travel outside East Asia, and only 15% with a desire to discover Europe.

For travelers, the main criteria for choosing a destination will be safety (39%), tourist facilities (35%) and affordability of travel services (32%).

The presence of world-famous monuments continues to carry significant weight for long-haul visitors when choosing a travel destination. Its importance is now on a par with favorable weather conditions at the destination,” states the press release issued by ETC.

The survey also revealed that 21% of respondents prefer destinations that respect cultural and natural heritage. In contrast, only 15% find it important to visit less-frequented destinations.

Unsurprisingly, the star cities in Europe include Paris, the capital of love, London and Dublin, followed by Rome, Reykjavik, Amsterdam and Lisbon.

Reducing costs for better travel

Again according to the European Tourism Commission, reducing purchasing costs is the best budgeting strategy for many travellers.

Holidaymakers also limit their costs by booking all-inclusive packages, using loyalty programs or booking cheaper accommodation. Last but not least, travelers are looking for inexpensive restaurants and activities.
