The Readers Choice Awards 2020 of the Condé Nast Traveler released its results this month: The Belmond British Pullman won hands down the first place in the ranking of the best luxury trains for its unique experience.

The Belmond British Pullman is a private luxury train with many different travel options on board.

Between weekend travel, tea afternoon or champagne tasting, many more choices are offered to its passengers for their greatest pleasure during this unmissable stay.

Travelling through the British countryside from London, this train offers to share a unique and exclusive moment by going back in time, all this in a glamorous, luxurious and adventurous setting.

This 1920s train has retained all the vintage charm of its glory days, notably with its traditional fabrics and period lighting. The Belmond British Pullman is composed of 11 carriages, each promising a timeless journey through their stories, names and personalities.

Originally, some of the cars were used for British rail service, while others, the oldest called “Ibis” was used for the very first time during the Milan-Venice journey to the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express in the 1920s, considered the “sister” of the Belmond British Pullman, a prestigious train linking cities from France to Venice.

The “Phoenix” car was formerly used as a static restaurant in Lyon, France, and was much later chosen personally by Queen Elizabeth of England as her personal carriage. The “Vera” car had the honor of welcoming Prince Charles and Princess Anne in the 1950s on their first trip by electric train.

The Belmond British Pullman provides its passengers with whimsical and intriguing stories to make their journey as exciting as it already is. This luxury train even offers its own immersive experience during a “murder mystery lunch” in reference to the 1979 cult movie “Agatha” by Dustin Hoffman where two of its carriages appear: the “Perseus” and the “Cygnus“.

In addition, an incident that happened at the Belmond British Pullman at the time inspired Agatha Christie’s world-famous novel “Murder on the Orient Express“, when a wagon was caught in a snow trail for ten days in the city of Istanbul. These events forever immortalized the history of this train.

However, the global health crisis has taken its toll on the world economy and the various markets, a global event that has brought all the countries of the world to a standstill, especially the United Kingdom. The British train, which had planned everything for this year, has had its next bookings postponed until September 29, 2021.

The prestige of this very special trip is unusual, prompting art deco and vintage enthusiasts to book sometimes a year in advance to ensure their place on board. The Belmond British Pullman, which was fully booked for this new season, has therefore had to cancel all shipping.
On average, tickets for this trip start at $323, or 275 euros, and go up to $646, or 551 euros.

In order to ensure the peace of mind of passengers and the resumption of travel by the end of September 2021, Gary Franklin, Belmond’s Vice President of Trains and Cruises, was keen to reassure his customers about all the security measures implemented on board each car, including the reduction of capacity in each car and the social distancing measures put in place: “Each car has its own dedicated steward ensuring an intimate service and allowing us to continue to offer our customers a truly exceptional experience“.
