The French communications group published good results for the first half of the year. While the consensus among analysts expected results to be severely impacted by the epidemic, Publicis held up well, thanks in particular to the contribution of Epsilon.

The world’s third-largest communications group generated net income of 136 million euros in the first half of 2020, compared with 345 million euros at the end of June 2019.

Operating margin amounted to €622 million, up 1.6% year-on-year.

The operating margin was 13%, down 1.1 points from 14.1% in the first half of 2019.

It should also be noted that with respect to the acquisition costs of Epsilon in the first half of 2019, the operating margin rate was down 200 basis points.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the Group was impacted as of March and suffered a sharp decline in organic growth, down 8% in the first half of 2020.

Recalling that Publicis has got off to a good start in 2020 thanks to a solid start in the United States and the continuation of its momentum in winning new accounts.

Publicis Groupe’s net income was EUR 4.774 billion, up 9.7%. Most of the Epsilon acquisitions contributed 743 million euros to net income.

Ebitda was 923 million in the first half of 2020 compared to 885 million euros in 2019, an increase of 4.3% including Epsilon’s contribution.

286 million in the first quarter on a comparable cost basis and excluding Epsilon acquisition costs, with a margin of 19.3% of net income (20.3% in the first half of 2019).

Publicis points out that reporting on the second quarter and net income will be difficult, as some countries will recover faster than others and customers will react differently.

That said, the margin rate for the second quarter will be much higher than the first, if we take into account the unfavourable impact of certain factors such as operating expenses, which will rise as countries reopen.

In addition, Publicis Groupe will continue to invest in its business model.
