Tesla CEO Elon Musk has just indicated that he is moving his headquarters from California to the state of Texas.
Elon Musk said Thursday that Tesla is considering moving its headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas, where it is building a massive electric car and battery manufacturing complex.
In May 2020, it was Donald Trump himself who encouraged the Texas factory to reopen and get busy in the midst of a global pandemic. At the time Elon Musk said he was annoyed at the way he was treated in California, deeming his company essential.
So it’s no coincidence that he decided to expand his operations in Texas. The CEO also moved there last December to be closer to his plants. At the beginning of 2021, he had a battery production plant built here. It plans to expand its activities here, especially for SpaceX, which is testing in Mc Greggor.
Texas, a panacea ?
Moving from Silicon Valley, although a hive of development of new ideas and companies, to Texas is also an opportunity because the U.S. state is known for its cheaper labor and less stringent regulations.
“I’m pleased to announce that we are moving our headquarters to Austin, Texas,” Musk said at the company’s annual meeting, which was held at the Texas auto plant. “It is not for Tesla to leave California,” said the boss of Tesla. He also said that he planned to increase production by 50% in its main California plant and its Nevada plant.
“We can not expand infinitely in the Bay Area“. At issue is the high density, high cost of living and often difficult traffic. Whereas in Austin, the plant is located “five minutes from the airport and fifteen minutes from downtown,” he adds.
We can assume that the idea behind this expansion in Texas is the opportunity for Tesla to expand its production capacity and localize its production and operations, to become as complementary as possible and avoid unnecessary transportation of goods. A decision that comes at a time when Texas is under debate for its anti-abortion law.
