Volkswagen, the German manufacturer, presented its brand new 100% electric sedan at the Shanghai Auto Show, which took place from April 18 to 27. Other brands such as BMW or Nissan unveiled their new vehicles. And we can say that this year, the trend is green!

The Shanghai Auto Show is the largest car show in the world. Every brand on the planet comes to unveil their innovations and latest creations, starting with Volkswagen.

We are boosting our electric campaign,” said Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer, while demonstrating an electric minibus.

Teased and awaited for several months, the new Volkswagen electric luxury sedan was finally presented to the public and professionals. With a battery range of 700 km and a new 286 hp engine, the successor to the Passat is called the ID 7. It is one of 28 models presented at the show by the brand, half of which run on green energy.

Its original design does not go unnoticed. Equipped with dozens of colored pixels, it is reminiscent of a QR code graphic or the infinite world of the Internet.

Electricity, more fashionable than ever

Faster charging, satellite navigation and entertainment, the possibility of autonomous driving technology, this is what brands like Volkswagen, BMW, BYD or NIO are offering at this large-scale automotive event. Even though some models stood out, what stands out the most in this 2023 edition is electric.

In addition to hosting the world’s largest auto show, China happens to be the world’s leading market for electric vehicles. With the European and American markets in a time of low demand, manufacturers are looking to the Middle Kingdom to drive sales growth.

They need to be more inventive and innovative in a highly competitive environment, where Chinese brands play an important role. Some of them are forming partnerships to share development costs.

China “is playing a leading role in the industry’s electric and digital transformation,” Ford Motor CEO Jim Farley said in a video message.

In a few numbers, electric vehicles account for more than a quarter of the nearly 24 million SUVs, sedans and vans, sold last year in China, while sales of traditional gasoline-powered vehicles have slowed.

Auto industry goes green

In addition to Volkswagen, other European automakers showed off their new electric car lines. BMW displayed an all-electric line, which includes two new models: the I7 M70 and the XM Label Red.

General Motors launched an electric SUV called the Buick Electra E5, even before the show. Toyota Motor unveiled two new models for its bZ line. The Japanese automaker also revealed a prototype autonomous cab developed with smart vehicle technology company Pony.ai.

This year, sales of electric vehicles are expected to increase by another 30 percent.
