After Thierry Mugler, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD) is devoting an exhibition to the avant-garde Schiaparelli, “Shocking Chic, the surrealist worlds of Elsa Schiaparelli”, from 6 July 2022 to January 2023.

Much more than a meeting with the designer, the exhibition reveals the inspirations between fashion and art of Elsa Schiaparelli. Her first and main rival Coco Chanel called her “the artist who makes clothes”. Her deep fascination with the world of art led Schiaparelli to collaborate on numerous occasions with artists including Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, among others.

“She embodies a vision of a bright and vibrant Paris, curious about everything, enjoying every new thing. It is this incredible freedom that the exhibition wishes to offer visitors, the freedom to create, the freedom to dialogue, the freedom to be oneself, through models, drawings and jewellery, many of which – thousands of them in the case of the drawings in particular – were donated by Elsa Schiaparelli to the Union française des Arts du costume, whose collections are held by the Musée des Arts décoratifs”, comments the MAD.

At the meeting of “Shocking Chic. The Surrealist Worlds of Elsa Schiaparelli” at the Musée des Arts décoratifs, 107, rue de Rivoli, Paris 1er. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm, 8 pm on weekends and nocturne on Thursday.
