Saint Laurent diverts the codes of traditional parades a second time in its first off-calendar parade

A return to basics and optimism are the values that Saint-Laurent wanted to highlight when presenting its women’s summer 2021 collection. On Tuesday 15 December the brand unveiled an extraordinary visual experience through a fashion show in the heart of the Moroccan desert.

It’s been said for a long time that things had to change,” he said at the time in the American trade daily “WWD”. It’s finally time for a change. I will present a collection when I am ready. We will continue to rationalise our production rhythms with less pressure on seasonality”. announced Anthony Vaccarello, during the first wave of the pandemic.

The big luxury house had therefore decided to withdraw from the official Fashion Week calendar and therefore decided to present its collections according to its own agenda. It had then pointed out the much too frantic rhythm of the catwalks as well as the disproportionate investments for an absurd catwalk time.

A few months earlier, the brand had already made a strong impact in the digital world by unveiling its Spring/Summer 2021 men’s collection through a video on which its models were catapulted over the rooftops of Paris, the Great Wall of China and New York’s Brooklyn Bridge.

This month, Anthony Vaccarello, the creative director of the brand, once again perfectly combines fashion and digital by presenting his collection in a setting of immensity and purity. 66 models  have thus paraded in the video created by Nathalie Canguilhem ” I Wish You Were Here “ respecting social distancing and elegantly lifting the sand.

FREEDOM is the key word of this fashion show and of this collection. This freedom is revealed first of all through the chosen setting : a space without borders, a desert whose exact location is not known and which is synonymous with calm and serenity.

«I wanted to concentrate on the essential, given the current times. On the other hand, I wanted to remain positive, without heaviness. For me, the desert setting evokes this need for serenity, space and a less frantic rhythm. The clothes are also more supple, there is a calmer state of mind in this collection says Vaccarello. »

In a second time, freedom is translated by the outfits and pieces that parade in this peaceful environment : the collection finds its sources in a desire to dress the body without constraining it. The silhouettes wander around in comfortable, transparent and low-cut outfits, reminiscent of the Belgian designer’s trademark, but above all of the times we live in.

Indeed Saint Laurent has not deviated from the pandemic trend that has redesigned fashion with “home wear”. In fact, Dior opened the ball with its “Dior at home” collection.

Faithful to the favourite activity of luxury brands, Saint Laurent generates strong emotions in the spectator and returns to the essential while inviting him to do the same. The film broadcast by the brand thus unveils a relaxed collection in a soothing atmosphere, encouraging the public to refocus on themselves and to rediscover a sense of well-being so necessary in these difficult times.
