Despite a sluggish business due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Rolls-Royce has just unveiled a new car model: the “Boat Tail”. Literally meaning “back of a boat”, its appearance evokes the lines of a yacht.
Tinted in dark blue with a few touches of light blue, the inspiration for this car comes from the marine environment. This unique car, measuring 5.79 metres in length, has so far been produced in only three examples, and has been made to a level of customisation unmatched by the luxury brand.
“We accepted this project four years ago and the result is the Boat Tail. For us it is the pinnacle of all our activities at Rolls-Royce”, explains Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Rolls-Royce’s executive director.
What makes it special? The “bonuses” that it has and that will benefit future buyers of the Boat Tail. The Boat Tail has side panels that lift up to form a table with a sunshade, so that you can have lunch or dinner in the open air from your car. In addition, underneath the ‘rear deck’ is a double champagne fridge, silver cutlery with ‘Boat Tail’ engravings and matching china plates; a unique design not previously seen in competing luxury car manufacturers.
A price tag of around 23 million euros
The Boat Tail, sold at a price of $28 million (€23 million), would be one of the most expensive cars in the world. Moreover, the creation of this boat car is not a coincidence, as it is a project that had already been realised in 2017, with the release of the “Sweptail“. The director even indicates that Rolls-Royce intends to continue and repeat every two years.
Although the carmaker was “hit very hard” last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with a total loss of 20-25% of their sales volume, demand nevertheless remained very strong. Since the last quarter of 2020, the manufacturer has enjoyed a significant rebound in sales, and says that “production for this year is already fully booked. Demand remains very strong and not only from Asia, but also from the US and Europe. It’s a promising global context and I think that’s the case for the whole luxury industry, there’s a lot of money ready to be spent”.
