While Brazil has just set a record for tourist numbers in 2024, the state of Rio de Janeiro will be introducing a tax-free scheme for its foreign guests this year. This should further boost the influx of visitors and their spending.
Just as Brazil has set a record for the number of visitors to the city in 2024, and just a few weeks before the start of its emblematic Carnival (February 28 to March 8), the state of Rio de Janeiro is introducing a new benefit for foreign tourists.
Starting this year, the state will be rolling out a tax refund scheme for purchases made by foreign tourists.
To benefit from this scheme, tourists will have to purchase goods locally, in accredited stores and establishments, using a credit card issued abroad.
Double spending?
However, the measure will not apply to the consumption of food and beverages in bars, restaurants and hotels, or to the provision of services in general.
