The Italian House Prada became the official partner of the Chinese national women’s football team on 10th July. The label will provide outfits to all team members, players and representatives, during their travels and appearances.

Between fashion and sport, there is only one step

It’s a big step in the football world, and a big step for fashion as well. The Milanese Prada House will dress for the next season all members of the Chinese women’s football team. The announcement comes as the Chinese team heads to Australia for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which began yesterday.

In the campaign released 10 days ago, all team members wear black suits, white shirts and Prada moccasins. An androgynous and classy look, which marks a step towards inclusiveness and shows a willingness of the brand to surf the trends and evolutions of the fashion world.

This collaboration is not insignificant. Prada is one of the largest current fashion houses while the Chinese Women’s National Football Team has built a solid reputation thanks to many victories. Last year, the players, also known as Steel Roses, won the Asian Cup.

“China’s women’s football team has earned a worldwide reputation and is a source of inspiration for young women athletes, drawing public and institutional attention to democratic and inclusive sport,” Prada said in a statement.

Internet users are delighted with this partnership, which has been welcomed by the world of sport. On the social network Weibo, which has more than 500 million members on Chinese soil, the hashtag #This time, Prada chose the right person came out on top of the hot search list, as on Twitter, with more than 470 million views.

This initiative allows the House to strengthen its ties with the sport industry in China, while influencers and celebrities have somewhat tarnished the brand’s image lately.

Prada therefore chose to diversify its list with new faces: athletes. Before the Chinese women’s football team, the Maison named basketball player Yang Shuyu as its brand’s last ambassador. In 2022, she hired table tennis player Ma Long.

Chinese buyers are happy and proud to see brands like Prada adopt national symbols of excellence in its ranks. Who will be next?
