According to a new Russian law, only sparkling wines from Russia can now use the word “champagne”. In response to this law, the LVMH group had to suspend deliveries to make the necessary adjustments.

French champagne producer Moët Hennessy announced on Sunday that it would now add the name “sparkling wine” on the back of bottles destined for Russia to comply with the country’s new law. This decision resulted in the suspension of deliveries to make the change.

French winegrowers carefully keep the name “champagne” for the production of the region of the same name, and refuse other names.

But the law, signed on Friday by President Vladimir Putin, obliges all non-Russian producers of sparkling wine, including the French, to describe their product as the Russian president wants, namely by adding “sparkling wine” and not champagne on the back of the bottle.

Moët Hennessy, which markets Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot and Dom Pérignon champagnes and belongs to the LVMH group, said it was forced to suspend deliveries to change the labels on its champagne bottles.

The MH Champagne Houses have always respected the legislation in force wherever they operate, and will resume deliveries as soon as possible once these adjustments have been made,” LVMH said in a statement.
