Luxury watches: We explain why the prices are so high

Master watchmaker, far from being a simple job, is a real meticulous work of watchmaking, where every detail has its importance. Thus, each high-end watch sold at a high price represents the result of thousands of hours of work.

Between precision, high technology and know-how, watchmaking has become an art in its own right, where meticulousness is a must. Between the finesse of the mechanism and the infinite number of parts needed to make a watch, one can quickly realize that not just anyone can become a master watchmaker. Let’s try to understand why luxury watches are so expensive.

When precision rhymes with luxury watches

Tudor, Omega, Longines, Rolex, Patek Philippe, or Audemars Piguet, are some of the most famous and recognized watchmakers, whose watch models are among the most expensive of all times.

Indeed, the precision required to manufacture these watches is worth thousands of euros. It requires specialized workshops and craftsmen, as well as excellent quality equipment and tools. The vast majority of high-end timepiece brands do not use subcontractors or component suppliers. Watchmakers, especially Swiss ones, build the watch from scratch, from design to assembly, including the making of the parts.

The long hours of work involved are naturally reflected in the price of these watches.

Luxurious materials used

The second reason for the cost of these watches is the materials used. Indeed, if some houses sometimes integrate 18-carat gold, diamonds or other precious stones in their watches, they all have one common material : zirconium oxide. In watchmaking circles, this is called “sapphire“. Sapphire refers to the transparent, extremely resistant and almost scratch-proof glass used in the manufacture of the glass covering watch dials. As previously mentioned, this glass made from zirconium oxide is one of the best substitutes for diamond, reproducing its brilliance to perfection.

A luxury marketing campaign

As with every product release, whether high-end or not, a marketing campaign is put in place to promote it. Each launch of a new watch model is the fruit of the imagination and reflection of the marketing teams of each watch company. This is the final step in the design of a luxury watch, crucial in the success or otherwise of the watch model presented. For this purpose, an event is organized, where the international press and influencers are invited, naturally involving some costs.

The high demand for luxury watches

Finally, the high demand of luxury watch buyers is the last reason that influences the selling price of luxury watches. Because of their great success or their very limited number, some watches are in high demand by occasional buyers and especially by collectors. For example, watches made in a few copies on the occasion of a sporting event are among those that receive the most attention from buyers. This was the case with the Richard Mille RM 27-04 watch, made exclusively for Rafael Nadal – limited to 50 pieces – for the 2021 edition of the French Open. As a result, when these watches are released, they sell out at an incredible rate.

This imbalance between the supply of watch companies and the demand of high-end watch buyers is therefore the last source of justification for the high price of high-end timepieces.
