Calling on friends of the house, Louis Vuitton is offering 200 versions of its iconic trunk, to be seen at an exhibition being held in Asnières until March 6. The works will then travel the world before being auctioned off in December 2022.

Celebrating the avant-garde nature of Louis Vuitton, the exhibition highlights the diversity of original works by 200 visionaries personalities and friends of the luxury house. The traveling exhibition has begun a journey around the world from Asnières in December 2021, and will make stops in Singapore, Beijing, Tokyo, New York and London for a few months in 2022.

To mark the birthday of Louis Vuitton’s eponymous creator, August 4, 1821, the company has called on a multitude of talents from all walks of life: art, culture, science, sports and humanitarian causes. The objective is to personalize the iconic Louis Vuitton trunk and create a work of art in their image. Among the visionaries are artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, illustrator Jean-Philippe Delhomme, Kenzo‘s artistic director Nigo and the Korean group BTS. They all started with a metaphorical blank canvas of 50 x 50 x 100 cm (approximately the dimensions of the first trunk designed in the 1850s) and let their imagination run wild.

Faye McLeod, the House’s Creative Director, explains the process: “Creativity has always been at the heart of this project, as we wanted to pay tribute to Louis’ ingenuity and audacity. Through these works, we can admire the creative vision of talents with eclectic profiles, all of whom are sensitive to the man that Louis Vuitton was.

The LV200 project remains a deeply philanthropic initiative. Indeed, the artists donated their entire fee to the charity of their choice from among 15 NGOs in 13 different countries, all selected for their commitment to promoting creativity among young people, and two million euros were raised. In addition, at the end of the exhibition, the 200 trunks and other related products will be auctioned by Sotheby’s in December 2022. All profits will be donated to the scholarship program created by the House.

In Asnières, in the historic family home of Louis Vuitton, visitors will discover the trunks on display, stacked on wooden crates that will be reused throughout the duration of the traveling exhibition to transport them. Among the activities, objects and experiences will be combined with immersive spaces: video interviews, book consultations, and a secret room with a jukebox designed by British DJ and producer Benji B.

After this first stage, the exhibition will fly to New York in February 2022, and will then reach other destinations throughout the year. For more information, click here.
