Maison Margiela unveiled its new Autumn-Winter 2020-2021 haute couture collection in a one-hour film shot by British photographer Nick Knight after his teaser at Fashion Week.

Last week during Paris’ Digital Fashion Week, Maison Margiela made a strategic choice to unveil only one teaser of its collection rather than the entire collection as the other Houses did.

In this teaser filmed by the famous British photographer Nick Knight, we see the model Léon Dame walking towards the camera while the colours were altered to coat the picture with a psychedelic halo.

In addition to photographer Nick Knight, stylist Olivier Rizzo and make-up artist Pat McGrath were also on hand.

Last night, the House finally decided to reveal its new pieces for the Autumn-Winter 2020-21 haute couture collection of the “Artisanal” line through this famous film that would have lasted almost an hour.

Behind the scenes of the creation

This film begins in the Parisian workshops of Maison Margiela. It presents the origins of the collection as well as its realization until its staging.

We witness all the stages of designing a collection, including casts and patterns, as well as fitting sessions.

Models and pattern makers wear GoPros on their foreheads and film the scenes from their own point of view.

It is always Nick Knight who immortalizes this moment with his majestic fingers.

The iconic figure of the House, John Galliano, who has been the artistic director for 6 years now, is also featured.

Galliano and his team talk about the inspirations behind the new collection, and he shows the video-conferences with the collaborators who have contributed to this creative project.

The inspirations of this collection are clear. Indeed, the brand has chosen to rely on Antiquity to translate its pieces.

A collection inspired by Ancient Greece

Each silhouette is named after a divine figure from Greek or Egyptian mythology, from Artemis to Gaia, Apollo, Prometheus and the muse Calliope

The British creator also made reference to neoclassical sculpture and in particular to the representations of the cloth draped over the ideal bodies conveyed by Ancient Greece.

This blurred work is found in dresses and jackets made of transparent fabrics, whose folds along the silhouettes give the materials a wet effect.

John Galliano wants to respect the values of his Recicla line. A collection that he inaugurated at the presentation of his Autumn-Winter 2020-21 ready-to-wear collection by Margiela, giving new life to clothing recovered from second-hand shops ed-hrvatski.com.

Upcycling is as much present in the thick wool and tweed coats that have been disassembled in order to be reassembled to new volumes as in the sheers.

To close this journey, Nick Knight has chosen to open the doors of a dark imagination between dream and nightmare. Mannequins appear in a bare set, filmed in negative, like a new magnetic paradise carried by several paintings and choreographies.

He plays on the mysterious side with their faces, sometimes covered with light veils, a little like Martin Margiela imagined during his first fashion show in 1939 on the idea of masks.

Mannequins dance sometimes in groups, sometimes alone and bring the pieces to life while the smoke and colours sketch the features of a parallel reality.
