Changes at Barrière. The group transforms its governance and capital distribution with the arrival of the fourth generation at the helm. The Lucien Barrière Group has regained its status as an exclusively family-run business, now wholly owned by Joy Desseigne-Barrière and Alexandre Barrière.

An emblematic French family-owned company, the century-old Barrière group is about to embark on a new chapter in its history with the ascension of Alexandre Barrière and Joy Desseigne-Barrière to the company’s helm as Chairmen.

They are the fourth generation to lead the company since it was founded in 1912 by François André.

This new direction is accompanied by the acquisition of the shares held by Fimalac since 2011. The clear objective of this new management is to promote the Group’s development and diversification, while remaining faithful to the fundamental principles that have given the company its strength for over a century.

“We are aware of our responsibilities, and we intend to assume them,” say Joy Desseigne-Barrière and Alexandre Barrière. “We will do what we feel is necessary to be worthy of the three generations that preceded us, and to make our 7,000 colleagues even prouder to work for Barrière, this century-old family-owned French Group. With this in mind, we have decided to buy back the shares held by Fimalac”.

Capital transfer

This new management style is accompanied by a change in the way the capital is held, with the acquisition of the shares previously held by Fimalac (40%) since 2011 within Groupe Lucien Barrière (GLB).

All shares in Groupe Lucien Barrière (GLB) are now in the hands of Alexandre Barrière and Joy Desseigne-Barrière. In addition, the formalization of the agreement to buy 10% of Société Fermière du Casino Municipal de Cannes (SFCMC) from Fimalac, authorized and announced on June 28, was finalized on July 21.

Joy Desseigne-Barrière and Alexandre Barrière expressed their deep gratitude to Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière (Fimalac), who has played an active role in the Group’s development. They also expressed their gratitude to Nicolas Sarkozy, who will remain on the Board until 2023.

Family heritage

Born in 1987, Alexandre Barrière is Chairman of Société de Participation Deauvillaise (SPD), the holding company behind Groupe Lucien Barrière (GLB), and of Société Fermière du Casino Municipal de Cannes (SFCMC). Alongside his sister Joy, they represent the fourth generation to run the Barrière Group, a centuries-old French family business.

After studying in the United States, including a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at the American University in Paris and an MBA in Hospitality Management at ESSEC, Alexandre Barrière joined the group. In 2014, he joined the Group’s Development department, before becoming Transformation Director in July 2018. In this role, he is responsible for designing new growth opportunities to meet customers’ changing needs. He joined the Management Board in November 2018 and was appointed Managing Director Hotels & Restaurants shortly afterwards. In early 2019, he joins the boards of GLB and SFCMC. In May 2021, he is appointed Managing Director of a new cross-functional entity in charge of strategy and development, while also maintaining his role as Transformation Director.

Born in 1990, Joy Desseigne-Barrière chairs the Boards of Directors of Société Fermière du Casino Municipal de Cannes (SFCMC) and Société Immobilière et d’Exploitation de l’Hôtel Majestic (SIEHM). With a Master’s degree in Political Science from Université Paris-Dauphine and a degree in Philosophy from Université Paris-Sorbonne, Joy began her career in London in 2016. She first worked at Publicis, then at BVA BDRC, where for four years she contributed to strategic projects for major hotel groups. She then joined the family business as a project manager in the casinos department on October 1, 2020. Since September 2021, as Data & Customer Knowledge Director, she has overseen strategic projects focused on customer knowledge and performance improvement, particularly in the gaming offering.
