Yesterday Wednesday, after 52 years of absence, the House of Balenciaga made its grand return to Haute Couture, with a show entitled “Balenciaga Couture”. Announced before the global pandemic, Balenciaga’s show was the most anticipated of the Fashion Week.

The venue for this show was carefully chosen as it took place in the historic building of the House founded by the designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. This recently restored building is located on the famous Avenue Georges V.

The show was attended by only a few hundred guests, but not the least. Actress Salma Hayek and her husband François-Henri Pinault (owner of Kering, the group to which Balenciaga belongs) were present, as well as the famous rapper Kanye West and the dreaded Anna Wintour.

Silence was the order of the day for this show, as no soundtrack was played during the show. Indeed, Balenciaga chose to make its return to haute couture during an emotional and solemn event.

“Haute Couture is the very foundation of Balenciaga. Its raison d’être. So it makes a lot of sense to bring back Haute Couture, without looking to the past but showing the way to the future”, declared François-Henri Pinault.

Demna Gvasalia, Artistic Director of the house, wanted to reconnect with the DNA of Balenciaga, by returning to the heritage and legacy left by the founder, Cristóbal Balenciaga.

“Balenciaga is architecture. It’s not design. It’s not decoration. It’s about architecture and clothes are the first layer that dresses the body. So I didn’t really have a choice, especially in this house. But it also corresponds to the way I imagine clothes. Less ornamentation, and more structure from the human form, accentuating posture and attitude with sophistication and elegance, couture style. I try to marry Cristobal’s heritage and my vision in the same aesthetic”, explained Demna Gvasalia.

The show was marked by highly structured looks such as suits and dinner jackets for men and women, featuring voluminous square shoulders and baggy trousers. XXL bathrobes also made their appearance during this great return to haute couture. Black, Cristóbal Balenciaga’s favourite colour, was present, but as the silhouettes unfolded, the colours were revealed and illuminated the show.
