The label of Indian fashion designer Manish Arora Paris was placed in receivership in July 2020 due to unpaid wages of its employees. The case is currently in the hands of the Paris Commercial Court and the brand’s website has been temporarily closed.

Also known as the “John Galliano of India”, fashion designer Manish Arora is one of the most recognised Indian designers in the world for his collections reflecting traditional Indian and modern fashion.

Manish Arora’s label has been facing many financial problems for years, according to the American newspaper the New York Times, and for some months now has been sued by salesmen and employees of the brand for non-payment of the last salaries.

The fashion designer had already divested earlier this year from one of its longest-standing business partners, Deepak Bhagwani, who told the NYT that the brand’s French holding company had already been liquidated in July. Manish Arora announced in October in an email to the NYT that there was “a deep disappointment among all parties” without commenting on the real reasons and causes of this judicial liquidation.

Formerly creative director of the women’s collection for the French haute couture house Paco Rabanne between 2011 and 2012, the designer was a big hit with the Parisian fashion giants and was invited for the first time, from 2007, to participate in the Paris Fashion Week shows to present his collections. He is one of the first Indian fashion designers to make an impact on French haute couture fashion.

Manish Arora, a true pioneer of the Indian fashion industry originally based in New Delhi before moving to Paris, has also had the opportunity in the past to collaborate with famous global brands from various worlds, including MAC Cosmetics, Reebok and Swatch.

The famous Indian designer’s pieces have also been seen at the famous World of Wearable Art event in New Zealand, including one in particular that gave the designer the honour of being worn by the famous singer Katy Perry at the 2008 MTV Awards, a carousel dress in the shape of a circus ride. The designer’s collections are now exported internationally, notably to Japan.
