The European Commission has finally postponed the application of customs duties on a list of American products for two weeks. It will not be known until mid-April which products are concerned, and whether whisky and certain make-up products are still included.
The European players, particularly the French, in wines, spirits, champagnes and beauty are likely to be burning a lot of candles in the coming weeks…
On Thursday, March 20, the European Commission announced that it would postpone until mid-April the entry into force of taxes on American products, in retaliation for the 25% tariffs imposed on European steel and aluminum by Donald Trump.
“The countermeasures of the EU announced on March 12 will all take effect in mid-April,” explained Olof Gill, spokesman of the European executive for trade, in order to allow ”more time for discussions with the US administration.”
Whiskey, makeup products and essential oils
On Wednesday, March 12, the very day that Donald Trump confirmed his increased tariffs on steel and aluminum imported into his country, the European Commission had drawn its sword and its President Ursula von der Leyen announced that it would apply tariffs “strong but proportionate” on a series of American products from April 1.
