The Swiss group MCH, owner of Art Basel, has won the tender to succeed the Foire internationale d’art contemporain in the Grand Palais. France has awarded the FIAC to the organizers of Art Basel for a period of seven years, in the same niche as the event created in 1974.

With the aim of developing its international influence, Paris decided to bet on Art Basel to organise the Paris event and to oust FIAC, which had already been exhibiting for 47 years at the Grand Palais.

“We didn’t rule out anyone, but chose the bid that best fulfilled our ambition to take advantage of Paris’s uniqueness and specificity,” explained the RMN-GP  (Réunion des musées nationaux – Grand Palais) to AFP.

“By combining the history of Art Basel and the cultural heritage of Paris, our ambition is to launch a new event that brings together artists, collectors, curators and gallery owners,” said MCH, the group that also organizes contemporary art fairs in Switzerland, Miami and Hong Kong. They also said that Art Basel would bring its 50 years of experience in creating art fairs to the project.

RX France, which owns the FIAC, called the decision “dangerous” and said it would have “significant repercussions for many players on the cultural scene”. RX France, which organised the annual FIAC contemporary art fair in Paris until last year, will continue to organize an annual international photography fair, RMM-GP said.

Indeed, RX France will retain the photography exhibition Paris Photo, which will be held in 2022 and 2023 at the Grand Palais Éphémère in the Champ de Mars park and from 2024 at the Grand Palais. The Grand Palais, a mecca for the arts and sciences for 120 years, is currently being renovated. It is expected to be partially reopened for the 2024 Olympic Games.

The International Contemporary Art Fair is scheduled to take place from 20 to 23 October and precedes Paris Photo, scheduled for 10 to 13 November 2022.
