Cognac: Why is Hennessy facing an unprecedented strike?

More than 450 employees of the famous cognac house belonging to the LVMH group went on strike to protest against a test project to relocate bottling to China. This would make it possible to avoid the surtaxes announced by Beijing on European brandies.

An unprecedented strike at Hennessy, the cognac house of the LVMH group’s wine and spirits subsidiary and market leader.

On November 19 and 20, production was halted at Hennessy’s administrative and bottling sites. The first time this has happened in a dozen years.

Around 450 employees formed a picket line on the morning of November 19 in Cognac, in front of the merchant’s head office. Called by the CGT, FO and CFDT unions, they were mobilizing against an experimental project to relocate bottling to China. The aim is to avoid the customs duties that Beijing recently decided to increase to over 30% on European Brandys, in retaliation for a surtax on Chinese electric cars announced by Brussels.

Departure on December 15

According to the information gathered by the unions, 1,000 liters will leave in a stainless steel container on December 15 by boat, explained the regional daily La Charente Libre.
