“Stroll in the Mediterranean” is the name of the new Cruise 2020/2021 collection from the iconic fashion house, unveiled today at noon French time online and on social networks. Chanel is thus the first luxury fashion house to take the plunge into the virtual world and to parade in a format adapted to social distancing. For an enjoyable 3.0 stroll along the steep paths of the Mediterranean coast.

A 100% digital catwalk show

Initially scheduled on May 7th in Capri, Italy, the Chanel Cruise 2020-2021 show had to be postponed due to the urgency of the health crisis linked to the Covid-19.

It was finally unveiled online this Monday, June 8 at noon, on the brand’s digital media, its website and social networks.

A digital first for the luxury industry as well as for Chanel, which thus tells the way to go for the big fashion houses which will also present their ready-to-wear and haute couture collections online next July.

An entirely digital collection that allows us to discover the brand’s very first creations since the health crisis, taking us into the digital world for a very exclusive virtual getaway in the Mediterranean Sea.

An exotic collection designed to travel light

Artistic director Virginie Viard, who succeeded Karl Lagerfeld after his death in February 2019, imagined this new collection with the “idea that we throw some of the pieces we love from Chanel into our suitcase“.

She has therefore imagined about fifty silhouettes – as opposed to the usual 70 – voluntarily shortening the collection to achieve more lightness: “This reversal has not so much influenced the collection that I wanted it to be smaller, lighter in every way”, she explained last Saturday in an exclusive interview with Le Figaro.

A swimsuit, a light skirt or a pair of espadrilles, the collection was designed to travel light with “a wardrobe that would fit in a small wheeled suitcase, a tote bag and an embroidered bag“, clothes that are easy to live with and can be used multiple times.

The designer thus opts for a resolutely free and relaxed look, inspired by the mythical actresses of the sixties when they were spending their holidays on the Italian or French Riviera.

It was also an opportunity to recall the origins of the cruise collections, which were traditionally aimed at a privileged clientele looking for a wardrobe adapted to their many travels throughout the year. She then breathes her modern flair without forgetting the fundamentals inherited from her mythical predecessor and Gabrielle Chanel.

A Chanel Cruise 2020-2021 collection that smells good “the islands, the scent of eucalyptus and the pink of bougainvilleas” and that we can enjoy online while waiting for the haute couture collection that will be presented on July 7th during the Paris Digital Fashion Week.
