Chanel unveils its first new leather goods product in three years: the 25 bag. Strongly criticized on social networks at the end of last year for its outrageous pricing policy and the increasingly disappointing perceived value of its bags, Chanel seems to want to play the accessibility card with its new shoulder bag.
Not everyone is Hermès.
Last autumn, the general public and professionals alike were particularly taken aback when the price of Chanel’s 2.55, its best-selling quilted bag, rose once again in an attempt to match Hermès’ price tag, topping the $10,000 mark! A staggering increase when you consider that the same model cost $5,800 in 2019.
Commentators and aspirational customers had not been kind to the product development of the Maison de la rue Cambon, considering that in view of thealmost non-existent innovation of its models, price inflation seemed unjustified.
Previewed at its Spring-Summer 2025 Haute Couture show on the arm of its new ambassador Dua Lipa, the new Chanel 25 bag seems to be a concrete response from the Maison to expand its customer base: offering a larger capacity model with less conventional leather, thus lowering the bill and increasing its quality/price ratio with generation Z.
A utility bag to win back Gen Z
For its first bag launch in three years, Chanel has opted for continuity and, above all, simplicity. Like its commercially successful 22 bag, the Chanel 25 is both a tribute to Chanel’s iconic 2.55 quilted bag and a reminder of its launch date: 2025.
Like all casual hobo bags, the Chanel 25 is shaped like an unstructured crescent. It features two cargo pockets on each side anda ventral section.
A bag that has the advantage of holding more than the classic 2.55 and the 22, in the shape of a pouch with a shoulder strap. The heroine of the promotional campaign, pop singer Dua Lipa, confided that the bag’s numerous pockets “allow me to slip in everything I like”. There’s room for my books, my sunglasses, a notebook or two, and even my crystals. It’s simply the perfect everyday bag!”.
