Italian police have arrested a Chinese couple accused of exploiting foreign workers in their leather goods business. The workers were responsible for making handbags for a Burberry supplier.
The communiqué issued by the Florentine tax police reveals that the two Chinese citizens were arrested on 9 June on suspicion of labour exploitation and tax evasion. Two other members of their family were banned from leaving Italy and €523,000 was found in their company.
It also gave more details on the workers who were allegedly exploited. The workers are believed to be mainly from China, Pakistan and Bangladesh and were forced to work up to 14 hours a day for just over €3 an hour.
The arrest warrant, unveiled by Reuters, gives more details of the charges against the four people involved. Indeed, they are said to run a leather goods workshop located in the suburbs of Florence, called “Samipell Srl” , a subcontractor of Tivoli Group Spa, supplier of Burberry. Founded in 2014, Samipell was declared bankrupt in March 2021, according to the Florentine court.
In the suburbs of Florence, hundreds of textile and leather workshops are located there. According to the Florence public prosecutor, Giuseppe Creazzo, these arrests are part of a large-scale operation to fight exploitation and illegal work in the area.
According to Giuseppe Creazzo, the Chinese people targeted by the investigation are subcontractors of a large luxury house, which he did not wish to name.

However, the arrest warrant includes a transcript of a telephone conversation in which one of the arrested persons tells one of the Tivoli employees that, if necessary, she will have her employees stay up all night to dye small “Title” bags, one of Burberry’s models, which are sold at a price of about €1,500.
Also, the Chinese couple has previously opened and closed several leather goods workshops since 2013 in order to evade taxes and authorities, while moving their workers and machinery from one company to another but keeping the same address cz-lekarna.com.
While this Burberry subcontractor has been accused of exploitation, it is by no means the first to be accused. In the nearby town of Prato, home to one of Europe’s largest Chinese communities, police have already summoned two Chinese nationals last May. They were accused of exploiting Chinese and African workers to make luxury handbags for Chloé.
Burberry, a leading British high-end fashion brand, which was allegedly supplied by the exploitative company, has notably not commented on the matter, and is not targeted by any of the charges.
