On Tuesday, March 18, Breitling announced that it would be buying Gallet, a watchmaking company founded in 1826. Renowned for its precision timekeeping, it is set to become the new entry-level brand of the Swiss luxury watchmaker.
After buying Universal Genève in 2023, Breitling, which celebrated its 140th anniversary last year, has made its second acquisition of a renowned watch brand in just two years.
Gallet, who is 58 years his senior, has the advantage of sharing adventure and aviation with Breitling. Having earned its stripes in international recognition, particularly in the United States, the brand lost some of its shine with the quartz crisis during the 1970s and 1980s.
Incursion into accessible luxury
With Gallet, Breitling is strengthening its presence in precision watchmaking with a heritage brand. The new acquisition of the Saint Imier manufacturer has made a name for itself with its precision timekeeping for frequent travelers, explorers and other adventurers.
For Breitling, which promotes heritage, excellence and the spirit of exploration, it is also a question of adding an entry-level brand to its portfolio and thus reaching a new, more aspirational clientele.
