Birks, one of the leading jewelry and fine jewelry brands in Canada and the United States, recently became a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC).

The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) is the global leader in sustainability standards for the jewelry and watch industry. It is the only standard for companies in the industry, from mining to retail, to integrate responsible business practices into their management systems and daily operations.

Birks’ membership in RJC demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices. The Canadian company is committed to improving its environmental, social and governance practices, integrating these three pillars into its daily business and corporate culture.

Birks consistently maintains high standards in its global procurement programs. As a leader in the Canadian jewelry industry, it is important for us to be part of the Responsible Jewellery Council,” said Jean-Christophe Bédos, President and CEO of the group.

For many years, the jewelry and watchmaking industry has wanted to contribute to a better and fairer world by implementing actions such as the traceability of their raw materials, product sheets for each of the pieces in their models and last but not least, membership in the RJC.

Birks : when jewelry rhymes with the environment

The Canadian company, inspired by the nature that surrounds it and the beauty of the landscape, is committed to preserving the earth and tries to raise awareness among its customers and other stakeholders about environmental protection through initiatives such as Birks for Bees.

This campaign, which puts bees in the spotlight, is a fundraiser. Proceeds from the sale of Birks Bee Chic bracelets are donated to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC). The company also supports the University of Guelph’s Bee Research Centre and Alvéole’s urban beekeeping initiative.

RJC executive director John Hall hopes the new membership will inspire other companies “both in Canada and around the world to make real positive changes in their business strategies.”

Memberships, but also departures…

The Responsible Jewellery Council has many luxury companies as members.  Among them is Alrosa, Russia’s leading state-owned diamond mining company. With the war in Ukraine, its involvement in the council has displeased many groups and brands.

Last April, some of them withdrew from the organization in protest. Pandora, Bulgari, Watches of Switzerland, Wouters & Hendrix but also Richemont and Kering are among them. The former CEO, Iris Van der Veken, has resigned from her position.

After these protests and departures, the Russian firm announced that it was suspending its membership “due to the current unprecedented circumstances.”
