Sold in Dubai to an anonymous collector, this “Birkin Voyageur,” one of four Hermès models (in addition to the initial prototype) that belonged to the singer, is now the second most expensive vintage bag ever sold at auction. The previous record holder, also a Birkin model, sold for €8.6 million in Paris this summer.
Will auction houses and museums have to dedicate a new department to Birkin bags?
The fact remains that the famous Hermès accessory that belonged to and bears the name of the late British singer, so popular in France, continues to make headlines at international auctions…
This summer, a first Birkin model had already broken the record for the most expensive bag sold at auction, fetching a stratospheric €8.6 million under the hammer at Sotheby’s in Paris. And on December 5, a second Birkin bag was sold by the same auction house in Dubai, this time for €2.45 million. Admittedly, this price is three and a half times lower than the first, but it still earns it the silver medal for the most expensive vintage bags sold at auction…
Private collectors
Here too, the outcome was decided after ten minutes of suspense and bidding… And in both cases, it was private collectors who won the day, a Japanese buyer in the first case and, in the second, a buyer on the phone, whose nationality was not disclosed. He was up against five other collectors.
