Already tested by the global pandemic, U.S. retailers are reorganizing in the face of the wave of protests

U.S. retailers Walmart and Target Corp. announced Sunday that they will close several of their stores across the country due to looting during U.S. protests.

After the tragic death of George Floyd, a black man seen on video while a white policeman was kneeling on his neck, waves of demonstrations have multiplied throughout the country leading sometimes to acts of violence and in particular to the looting of various distribution chains and shops.

“We hope to reopen our doors as soon as possible,” said a spokesman for Grove Shopping, on the outskirts of Los Angeles, where several stores were robbed. “We had impacts at some of them and are in the process of assessing any damage so we can resume serving customers.”

The City of Angels also saw the protests turn into the ransacking of an Alexander McQueen store on Rodeo Drive.

After being hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, retail sales in the United States experienced record declines. The economy is on track for its largest second-quarter contraction since the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Hundreds of stores across the country are now closing their doors to the public for safety reasons. This is a considerable loss for retailers who must multiply their efforts to recoup their losses.

“It is even possible, particularly if the unrest continues and spreads, that it would, all other things being equal, have a significant impact on investor psychology and the markets,”  said Robert Phipps, director at Per Stirling.
