Pommery & Associates in talks with Henkell International

The champagne house Pommery & Associés is reportedly in talks with the German group Henkell International regarding a potential acquisition of a majority stake. This would be a godsend for a group facing significant debt.

The Reims-based company Pommery & Associés is currently facing a strained global wine market : caught between sluggish consumption among Gen Z and increased international competition, French champagne could soon fall under German control…

Maison Pommery, an exceptional heritage dating back 150 years

Founded by Jeanne Alexandrine Pommery, this small family business grew, within a few decades, into one of Reims’s leading houses and established the reputation of the brut style worldwide. In 1874, it launched “Pommery Nature,” a sugar-free champagne intended to accompany a meal rather than dessert. This style immediately appealed to a British clientele and marked a turning point in Champagne tastes and production.

The Reims chalk cellars—this vast network of underground galleries carved into the chalk beneath the city of Reims—also contributed to the renown of this expertise and the region. The Romans had already used them, but their use intensified during the 18th century with the boom in champagne production in the region. Faced with growing demand for storage space during this period, oenologists and producers were searching for spaces suited to the maturation requirements for creating sparkling wine. The chalk cellars, with a constant temperature between 10°C and 12°C, high humidity, and optimal darkness, represent an ideal location for aging wine and champagne.

On July 4, 2015, Champagne, thanks to its numerous hillsides, houses, and cellars, was added to the highly prestigious list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the category of “living, evolving cultural landscapes.” This universal recognition honors three centuries of winemaking expertise that has shaped the terroir, through magnificent vintages and bottles enjoyed across many continents.

Using history to create a brand experience

Since 2002, Pommery & Associés has offered the POMMERY EXPERIENCES, a tour of the Domaine Pommery chalk cellars taken over by artists who use their art to engage with the site’s history and architecture, and who reinvent it through often monumental works. Artists such as Daniel Buren, Bertrand Lavier, Tadashi Kawamata, and Jean-Michel Othoniel have created installations that offer a vibrant panorama of contemporary art, making the Domaine an essential destination on the contemporary art scene.

The house transforms its cultural heritage, history, and cultural roots into an immersive experience, to the point of becoming one of the embodiments of the French Art de Vivre: a powerful lever for differentiation and value creation. It is precisely this intangible capital—history, image, immersive experience—that makes this heritage house so attractive to major international groups.

When heritage becomes a strategic asset

If an international group is interested in Pommery today, is it solely for its wine business or for the intangible value of its heritage ? This strategic negotiation between Maison Pommery & Associés and Henkell International would allow the German leader to secure a majority stake in the French group. With debt exceeding 750 million euros, and despite the sale of Heidsieck & Co Monopole and a premium repositioning, the French group could find itself in a strong position in the face of a saturated wine market: a strengthened international presence and considerable clout in the sparkling wine market.

If Maison Pommery & Associés is now attracting the attention of international players such as Henkell, it is thanks to the quality of its wines and the work of its vineyards, but also for its heritage. The latter constitutes a rare strategic asset, capable of generating value, desirability, and legitimacy in a market seeking authenticity.

For Henkell International, this acquisition would represent both a strategic and economic asset. With 100% control of Henkell Freixenet since March 2026—one of the world’s leading sparkling wine producers—Henkell has been pursuing an aggressive expansion strategy in recent years and is consolidating its position as a global leader in sparkling wines. In 2025, the group generated €1.25 billion in revenue.

In a wine market under pressure, the value of a champagne house no longer rests solely on the quality of its cuvées or on price, but on its ability to transform its cultural space into a powerful tool for desirability and differentiation.
