[Luxus Magazine] Avocado, Between Culinary Phenomenon and Ecological Disaster

Having become a symbol of the healthy lifestyle, the popular avocado also has a dark side. Its massive water use, deforestation, and polluting transportation raise questions about its consumption.

The avocado has become a highly sought-after fruit in Europe. According to World Metrics, the European Union consumes about 2.3 million tons of avocados per year. France stands out in particular and is often cited as the European country that consumes the most, with around 160,000 tons annually. On average, a French person consumes 2.3 kg of avocados each year, according to the World Avocado Organization.

Produced mainly in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Peru, the avocado has gone from being an exotic fruit to a staple of modern plates, earning the nickname “green gold” in many countries.

The avocado is used in a wide range of classic recipes, such as traditional guacamole, but also in more gourmet dishes thanks to its adaptability. Easy to prepare and cook, it is available year-round, making it part of contemporary eating habits.

Its creamy texture and richness in healthy fats make it a popular ingredient in diets perceived as balanced and nutritious. Athletes praise its nutritional qualities and intense flavor, which enhance protein-rich dishes, while the “clean girl” trend encourages its consumption.

This consumption boom is not only culinary but also social and cultural. On social media, the avocado has become emblematic of healthy trends and the ultra-trendy weekend brunch, especially with the rise of avocado toast: a slice of toast topped with raw or prepared avocado and an egg, sometimes accompanied by a protein like smoked salmon.
