The House of Breguet, created in 1775 by its eponymous founder, has been synonymous with prestige and innovation since its inception. After two new models last year, for the start of the summer season it is offering a re-edition of one of its emblematic creations: the Type XX.

It took four years to develop the new generation of the iconic Type XX, with two new versions: one with a military look (Type 20), the other inspired by civilian models (Type XX). The Maison has thus given its timepieces a new lease of life, with an emphasis on the contemporary and technological.

Breguet, in the air and on the ground

For almost 70 years, the Type XX collection has accompanied the history of aviation. The story began in 1950, when Breguet, already a specialist in the manufacture of aviation products, heard that the French Air Force was looking to equip its pilots with a timepiece with specific features.

Two years later, the first prototypes of the Type XX model saw the light of day and were supplied to the air force, then to the navy. The timepiece’s reputation soon spread beyond military circles to the world of civil aviation and watchmaking enthusiasts.

Since then, it has been constantly reinvented and adorned with new advances and designs, winning over many people over the years. New materials, new colors for dials and bracelets, new functionalities, but also new adepts, such as women, renew the adventure. Long considered a masculine model, the Type XX is getting a facelift and becoming more feminine.

French Air Force, Flight Test Center, Naval Aviation and numerous pilots: the nec plus ultra of aviation has flown the skies, accompanied by the mythical Type XX watch.

And the list doesn’t end there, as this wristwatch with its advanced mechanism has also won over the Gendarmerie Nationale and…the Moroccan Air Force. And the Type XX has also charmed the world of sport, from motor racing to athletics to soccer.

Type 20, the military heritage

This model is inspired by the 1,100 delivered to the French Air Force in the 1950s. The dial has been modernized, while remaining true to its identity. The numerals, hands and triangle on the bezel are luminescent and take on a mint green color. The 30-minute counter is now larger than the seconds counter. A date window has also been added.

La Maison Breguet, créée en 1775 par son fondateur éponyme, est depuis ses débuts synonyme de prestige et d’innovation.

The case is made of steel, measures 42 mm in diameter and features a non graduated bezel, like those delivered in the past.
The push-button at the top right of the dial triggers the time-consuming function, while the second triggers the “return to flight” function. The first is used for starting and stopping, the second for resetting the chronophage and restarting it immediately.

Type XX, the lineage of civilian versions

This second model, with its adventurous look, follows in the footsteps of the finest Type XXs of the 50s and 60s. As with the first model, the dial is black. The hands, numerals and small triangle on the bezel are coated with an ivory-colored luminescent treatment.

As with the Type 20, the 42mm steel case features a bi-directional graduated bezel. Likewise, the first pusher is used to start and stop time-consuming functions, while the second allows immediate reset and restart.

To add variety, Breguet offers this model with an interchangeable strap. One is in havana-colored calf leather and the other is a black NATO strap, whose special feature is that it fits under the watch case.

Cutting-edge technology

After four years of research and development at the Manufacture Breguet, the brand is proud to present the new self-winding caliber 728 for the civilian version and 7281 for the military model. Most of the parts of this caliber, a blend of innovation and cutting-edge technology, are made of silicon, a material that is insensitive to magnetic fields and highly resistant to wear. The aesthetics of this new movement are also noteworthy. The sapphire crystal caseback lets you admire every detail. Finally, the power reserve for both models is 60 hours.

A reinvention of two of the French Maison’s most emblematic models, which will continue to make their way in the air, on land, but also in the water, since the watch is adaptable for aquatic locations up to 100 meters below ground.
