The U.S. retailer caused a stir by selling a dupe (an extremely similar but unbranded product) of Hermès’ famous Birkin tote bag online for less than $100 during the holiday season. The model was the subject of viral videos and aroused the indignation of the Union des Fabricants (Unifab), before being withdrawn from sale at the very beginning of January.
Santa Claus doesn’t exist, and a Birkin bag by Hermès for less than 100 dollars, available in just a few days, even less so…
While buying the famous saddler’s bag requires a well-stocked wallet and usually a good dose of patience, the American retailer Walmart made headlines by offering a dupe for 93 dollars (90.93 euros) on its online sitefor the festive season, in twelve colors… The model was reportedly sold out in many shades. But on January 1, no doubt in response to the outcry, the retailer apparently removed the ad from its site, explains the US Sun.
Object of desire and scandal
The object of desire (and scandal…) in question is a bag strongly inspired by the famous tote bag imagined in 1984 by Jean-Louis Dumas, then president of Hermès, to satisfy Jane Birkin.
The iconic sixties singer, who passed away in July 2023, had complained to the executive that she couldn’t find the accessory that would meet her expectations as a young mother. At the time, Serge Gainsbourg’s former partner was raising two-year-old Lou Doillon, 13-year-old Charlotte Gainsbourg and 17-year-old Kate Barry.
