The Turkish courts have ruled in favor of an Izmir bookseller who had named his store “Hermès bouquiniste”. The famous saddler from the rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, who wanted to prohibit him from doing so, was overruled.
A case that could set a precedent…
Turkish professional Umit Nar, who had named his outlet “Bouquiniste Hermès”, has won his case against the famous Maison de la rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré.
The latter wished to prohibit the bookseller from using the name of the famous Greek God of commerce.
Although the Turkish authorities initially listened to the Maison de luxe, the courtsruled in favor of his compatriot.
Confusion risk
The story began in 2021, whenUmit Nar wanted to register the trademark he had been using for fifteen years in Istanbul and then in Izmir for his second-hand book store. He then turned to Turkpatent, the administration in charge of intellectual property.
