Manolo Blahnik: why is it only now opening a store in China?

The designer of high-end shoes Manolo Blahnik, popularized by the Sex and The City series, has finally been able to inaugurate his first point of sale in mainland China. In 2022, he had succeeded in recovering the rights to his brand, registered in the country in 1999 by an indelicate local businessman.

November 8 was a big day for British shoe brand Manolo Blahnik: it opened its first store in mainland China, in Shanghai’ s luxury Plaza 66 shopping mall.

 

Founded in 1970 by the eponymous Spanish designer and still owned by him and his family, the House, which markets its collections in some thirty countries, had to wait a long time to make its debut in the Middle Kingdom.

 

To mark the occasion, and stroke the national pride of its future customers, Manolo Blahnik accompanied the inauguration with the creation of exclusive models for the Plaza 66 boutique, inspired in particular by the jasmine flower of the Chinese winter.

 

One store a year

The store’s design, a variation on the classic Georgian style of the historic London boutique, was conceived by Kristina Blahnik. The designer’s niece, who became CEO of his Maison in 2013, trained as an architect. However, she collaborated with Chinese designer Chen Darui to develop the colorful furniture for this first unit in mainland China.
