This Friday, March 1, fashion icon and businesswoman Iris Apfel passed away at the age of 102 at her home in Palm Beach, Florida. First announced via her official Instagram account, the news made the front page of the New York Times on Saturday morning. Born in Queens on August 29, 1921, the centenarian held an important place in the hearts of New Yorkers and, more broadly, in the world of fashion and the arts.

Iris Apfel is one of those personalities with multiple lives. In her youth, she studied art history at New York University and the University of Wisconsin. For a time, she turned to journalism, becoming an editor for the newspaper Women’s Wear Daily before moving into interior design. Thanks to an internship with an interior designer Elinor Johnson, she learns to develop her distinctive visual sense.
In the meantime, she met Carl Apfel in 1948, with whom she remained married until his death in 2015. The couple also teamed up in business and made a name for themselves in the production of luxury textiles, participating in the development of the White House under the mandates of nine presidents.
Irreverent icon
Over the years, Iris Apfel has cultivated a sharp sense of fashion, combining eclectic style with innate elegance. She has become a fixture on the New York social scene, with looks that leave no one indifferent.
Her oversized wardrobe is a testament to her busy life. Over the decades, Iris Apfel has built up a collection of designer pieces that occupies two floors of her Park Avenue apartment.
