With the 5th wave of covid and new restrictions looming, seasonal workers must adapt.
In Courchevel, as elsewhere, the holiday season looks rather sober this year, due to new health restrictions in the world. The ski resort is mobilizing to prevent its rich clientele, 70% of whom are foreign, from condemning the tourist season.
The British, who represent 30% of the resort’s clientele, are the most targeted. Indeed, since last Saturday, they are banned from traveling to France except for “compelling reasons”. In fact, many of these British customers escape this rule, either because they are owners or residents in Europe, or because they have transited through Italy or Switzerland to arrive in the resort. But others had to cancel their stay altogether.
The Russians, who also love Courchevel, are facing another problem. The Russian Sputnik V vaccine is not approved in Europe, so they don’t have a valid health pass to travel in Europe, so they have to be tested regularly, which is a hindrance to their travel plans.
Adapting to last, the secret of the Courchevel resort
So far, stay cancellations have been largely offset by waiting lists, according to Gilles Delaruelle, general manager of the tourist office. “The big question today is: is the government going to let the holidays pass and announce things in the fall based on the evolution of the variant?” he explains.
The hardest blow came from Morocco, where Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, a billionaire and Courchevel regular, had to cancel his stay after his country decided to close its borders. He had reserved 17 rooms and suites for his entourage, out of the 72 rooms in the 5-star Annapurna hotel. The hotel also had to give up on dancing for its guests on New Year’s Eve. “We have the impression that we are in a swimming pool, that every time we go out, we put your head under water,” laments the hotelier. laments the hotelier.

The municipality must also adapt to the requirements of health precautions. As in Paris, the big sound and light show planned for New Year’s Eve has been cancelled. To compensate for these constraints, new test centers are being set up in different locations in the resort and their total capacity will be “up to 2,000 tests per day during the Christmas and New Year period“, says the City Council.
