The French cognac industry recorded a sharp increase in exports to the United States in December. Year-end data show a real boom in shipments, as producers prepare for possible future restrictions in the wake of Donald Trump’s re-election, with the businessman taking the oath of office this January 20, at 11am (6pm Paris time).
The United States, one of the biggest export markets for French cognac, has seen this luxury product gain in popularity in recent years. It is now perceived as a high-end spirit, widely appreciated by American consumers. In order to meet this growing demand and anticipate potential further price hikes, French manufacturers have stepped up their deliveries.
Hennessy, the world’s largest cognac producer and owned by the LVMH group, increased its shipments in December by 17% compared with the previous month, and by more than a third compared with December 2023. Meanwhile, Courvoisier, a brand owned by Campari, more than doubled its exports to the United States over the same period.
These increases in shipments are part of a broader industry movement, driven by the prospect of new tariffs under the administration of incoming President Donald Trump.
