Franco-Italian group EssilorLuxottica has announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Optegra, a European network of ophthalmology clinics currently owned by investment fund MidEuropa. This strategic transaction confirms EssilorLuxottica’s ambition to become a major player in med-tech, at the intersection of optics and digital technologies.
Founded in 2007, the Optegra group is one of Europe’s leading private eye care operators. Through its brands on the continent (notably in the UK, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and the Netherlands), it operates over 70 clinics and diagnostic centers, offering both specialized medical care and elective surgery, notably in the fields of laser vision correction, cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment and age-related macular degeneration.
The company has also taken a strong digital turn in recent years, integrating artificial intelligence into its diagnostic tools and automating certain stages of the patient journey to improve the fluidity, precision and speed of care.
EssilorLuxottica’s strategic diversification
For EssilorLuxottica, this acquisition represents much more than a simple expansion of its business portfolio. It is part of a fundamental transformation, begun several years ago, aimed at building an integrated, digitalized patient pathway, from prevention to correction, via diagnosis and intervention.
