The know-how of Cognac, which was not selected by the French Ministry of Culture for inclusion in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, is not giving up hope. They hope to strengthen their bid to be listed by 2026.

Following the inclusion of the baguette in UNESCO’s World Heritage List last November, Cognac (Charente) had high hopes of being included in the famous list.

However, although the Charente department submitted a file to the Ministry of Culture in January, it was not selected. So, for the time being at least, Cognac’s know-how will not be included in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.

The dossier, comprising 50 pages and ten times more with the appendices, was revised and modified, but considered insufficient. As a result, it will now be three years before a new application can be submitted, in the hope that it will then be accepted.

For this session, the Ministry of Culture has decided to present the application of the skills of the Paris roofers and zinc roofers. The Ministry is limited to presenting a single dossier to the UNESCO jury.

Objective 2026

If the Cognac expertise is not selected for this edition, the association responsible for the project will have the opportunity to revise its file in order to present a more complete version at the next session scheduled for 2026.

The road to consecration is still long. The application must be accepted by the President of the Republic in person, before it can be examined by Unesco’s intergovernmental committee in 2025. Inclusion of Cognac’s know-how in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list would be a genuine recognition for the region’s entire emblematic sector.

Defending a historic heritage

The Charente-Maritime departmental council met for its spring session, from March 20 to 24, and voted in favor of registering the region’s expertise with UNESCO.

It pointed out that “since the seventeenth century, Cognac producers in the Charente-Maritime wine-growing region have developed skills that play a key role in enhancing the cultural and natural heritage of these regions. These skills are part of the historical and landscape heritage that makes up the character and identity of the Cognac-producing Departments, and whose intrinsic value is recognized internationally”.

“The unrivalled diversity and universal dimension of the local know-how involved in making cognac and with it the entire winegrowing industry, from grafting vine plants and selecting white grape varieties to vinification, distillation, ageing, blending, cooperage and ageing, some of which goes back centuries, not forgetting the manufacture of harvesting machines, vats, bottles, labels and corks”, add the elected representatives. “Given the importance of Cognac production on its maritime shores, particularly in Charente-Maritime, France has a vital role to play in protecting this exceptional know-how.”
