Next Wednesday, Christie’s auction house will present in Geneva the largest white diamond ever offered for sale, named “The Rock”.
For the “Magnificent Jewels” sale, Christie’s will offer the largest white diamond at auction, along with a historic canary yellow diamond, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Red Cross. At 228.31 carats, “The Rock is the largest white diamond ever offered at auction. It is a truly exceptional pear-shaped diamond,” Max Fawcett, head of Christie’s jewelry department in Geneva, told AFP.
The price of this sale could reach records, due to its rarity and highly sought-after pear shape. “It is perfectly symmetrical. It’s estimated to fetch $20 million to $30 million, and I expect an explosion of bidding,” Fawcett says. The last record Christie’s obtained for a similar white diamond, had reached some $33.7 million at a November 2017 sale in Geneva. “The Rock” was extracted from a mine in South Africa in the early 2000s.

Bidders will also be able to bid on “The Red Cross Diamond,” a 205.07-carat cushion-shaped yellow diamond. “It is estimated to fetch between 7 and 10 million Swiss francs. I expect it to achieve fantastic results at the sale https://ed-nederland.com/. A large portion of the proceeds from its sale will be donated to the International Committee of the Red Cross,” Fawcett says.
Several other exceptional diamonds will be offered on Wednesday, as well as a tiara that belonged to the Princess of Fürstenberg, a member of one of the most important aristocratic families of the Habsburg Empire. Its price is estimated at between 400,000 and 600,000 francs. “The diamond market is incredibly robust this year. The geopolitical situation has been difficult, there are inflationary pressures and diamond prices are at their highest level in seven or eight years,” says Max Fawcett.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine is having a major impact on this market as more than 40% of diamonds are mined in Russia. The conflict is having “significant repercussions because of this severe supply restriction on the current market, creating strong price increases“, comments the expert, expecting that the continuation of sanctions against Russia will “continue to drive up prices“.
