While sales are growing elsewhere in the world, French cosmetics sales have plummeted in the United States, impacted by tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. And they are expected to continue to suffer in this major market in 2026…
French cosmetics are not grateful to Donald Trump…
The fears expressed by the Federation of Beauty Companies (Febea) of a very negative impact, following the introduction this summer by the Americans of 15% tariffs on their European imports, have proved to be well-founded.
First decline in at least two decades
This is because the US market, their primary export destination (half of which is perfumes) and the world’s largest market for these products in general, has indeed weighed heavily on global exports of French cosmetics. In the first ten months of 2025, they declined for the first time “in at least 20 years, excluding the Covid period,” according to Febea’s general delegate, Emmanuel Guichard.
