With the inauguration on October 25 of its new building designed by Jean Nouvel on the Place du Palais Royal, opposite the Louvre Museum, the Cartier Foundation, dedicated to contemporary art, is giving itself the means to attract large numbers of visitors with larger-scale exhibitions.
Long before LVMH inaugurated its Fondation Louis Vuitton in 2005 in the Bois de Boulogne, Cartier, the famous jewelry and watchmaker of the Richemont group, had opened its own foundation dedicated to contemporary art in 1984.
The former now welcomes more than a million visitors a year, thanks to memorable modern and contemporary art exhibitions (the Shchukin collection, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hockney, etc.). But the latter, now forty years old, had become somewhat outdated, with more modest visitor numbers and less media coverage.
In the heart of the capital
But that could change. Because the Fondation Cartier, located since 1994 on Boulevard Raspail in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, has just moved to the heart of the capital. And it has moved to a location that is very popular with art lovers: right opposite the Louvre Museum, at Number 2 Place du Palais Royal! It is also close to two hot spots for contemporary art: the Bourse de Commerce, which has housed François Pinault’s collections since 2021, and the artists’ squat at 59 Rivoli. Meanwhile, the busy Rue Saint-Honoré and Rue de Rivoli contribute greatly to the liveliness of the neighborhood…
