It is considered to be the second White House and one of the most prestigious beach clubs in the world. For years, Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida has played host to the President’s close friends and distinguished guests. In fact, this famous luxury retreat has given its name to an intriguing beauty phenomenon.
Located just a few metres from the beach, the Palm Beach home of the billionaire and 45th and 47th President of the United States is much more than a second home. This sumptuous villa is proving to be a veritable cash machine for the businessman, as well as an increasingly important political hub.
A villa as royal as it is Hollywood
Mar-a-Lago is located in Palm Beach, the ultra-premium district of Florida that is home to many billionaires and celebrities, and takes its name from the Spanish for ‘from the sea to the lake’. A fitting title, given that the villa sits between Worth Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. Surrounded by beaches, it was built between 1924 and 1927 by businesswoman Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband Edward F. Hutton. Marion Sims Wyeth designed the architecture and Joseph Urban the decoration.
After the death of its former owner in 1973, the estate was transferred to the US government. It then became the official winter residence of the presidents. But it was difficult to secure the immense building while covering maintenance costs and annual taxes. The State finally sold the property to the Post Foundation in 1981, which put it up for sale for 20 million dollars.
