Yet this move upmarket was not artificially engineered. It stems from what the Camargue has always possessed: a living heritage, a strong cultural identity, and families that have passed down their history for generations.

Few establishments embody this philosophy as well as Le Mas de Peint.

 

At first glance, this elegant 17th-century residence appears to be an exclusive five-star hotel nestled amid the marshes. Yet its history began long before the advent of tourism.

 

The estate was built in 1602 by Antoine Peint, a wealthy cloth merchant from Arles. The story goes that the city of Arles, unable to honor a large debt it owed him, ceded these Camargue lands to him. Antoine Peint had his farmhouse built there, which naturally retained his name for more than four centuries.
