On the evening of April 28, Chanel kicked off the warm season—or rather, the 2027 Cruise collections. Highly anticipated, this first chapter of Matthieu Blazy’s collection, set against the sun-drenched backdrop of a seaside resort, took place in Biarritz and paid a heartfelt tribute to Gabrielle Chanel’s seaside heritage, sea bathing, and the city’s Maritime Museum.
Matthieu Blazy’s fifth Chanel show but his first of its kind for the Franco-Belgian designer, the April 28th show at the Biarritz Municipal Casino, across from Villa Larralde—where the fashion line was first launched in 1915—was highly anticipated.
Having made a name for himself in previous shows as a man of the sea—literally—this first Cruise collection was praised for its more pronounced femininity, more vibrant colors, and better-flattering silhouettes. A lack of coherence and a clear direction, however, remains a shortcoming.
