For a few months, the expression ‘Gen Z Stare’ has been circulating on social networks. She describes this fixed gaze, often empty or wide open, accompanied by an impassive face attributed to the young generation. Behind this apparent lack of reaction in everyday exchanges, hides a real social phenomenon, revealing a growing gap between Generation Z and its elders.
The “Gen Z Stare” emerged mainly in the US via TikTok in 2025. And he quickly sparked a generational debate on social media. On the platforms, many young people imitate this attitude rooted in their behavior: empty and fixed eyes, even judgemental ones, disdainful or spread wide and a static expression, without any words. As if the young people were put on pause. This posture did not fail to make older generations react, annoyed by this awkward passivity at the moment when a verbal response or social interaction is normally expected. And everyone seems to have arguments much deeper than one might think.
The ills of an ultra-connected and yet disconnected generation
For the younger generations, this gaze is nothing other than a legitimate response, even humorous or provocative, to questions deemed awkward, absurd or intrusive. Some see it as a conscious strategy stronger than words faced with a plurality of situations. Gen Z Stare is observed in the professional environment, whether in customer service contexts – cash register, catering, sales -, and when dealing with teachers in the school sector or colleagues and superiors at work. At home, this expression can also be a response to parents in case of disagreements.
