Originally known for its tanners experienced in perfumed leathers, Grasse<\/strong> has made perfume its specialty. Rich in the fragrant flowers of the region in which this city is located, it is quite natural that it has become over time the<\/strong> city of traditional perfumery<\/strong> registered on the list of intangible heritage of humanity with UNESCO.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Its unique know-how passed down from generation to generation has made it the world capital of perfumery<\/strong>, famous for the quality of its essences and its creations for the luxury perfume industry, among others.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But today, Grasse is making its olfactory skills available for the benefit of an exhibition: Respirer l\u2019Art<\/em><\/strong>. Located in the Mus\u00e9e International de la Parfumerie<\/strong>, this exhibition showcases several works of art that appeal to several senses. Indeed, in addition to being visual, the contemporary works offer an olfactory journey<\/strong> telling the story of the perfumes and aromas that are hidden behind them. Here are four surprising works of the exhibition to discover.<\/p>\n

Aura Soma<\/em> by Sylvie Fleury<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Aura Soma<\/strong><\/em> consists of 102 small 50 ml bottles filled with the immiscible liquids of oil and water, which have been perfumed and then colored. Each bottle being unique, the scents that emerge are all singular and have been imagined by a therapist to correspond to an individual client profile.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Inspired by the consumer society and the superficiality that contemporary culture can sometimes display, Sylvie Fleury<\/strong> wanted to stage the cult of luxury objects while questioning their real value.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

La Madone aux Fleurs<\/em> by Pierre et Gilles<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Embodied by the French singer Clara Luciani<\/strong>, La Madone aux Fleurs<\/em><\/strong> is a painting created by the photographic duo Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard. Masters and precursors of their singular art, Pierre et Gilles<\/strong> are famous for their photographs printed on canvas, then covered with paint.<\/p>\n

Breaking the boundary between art history and popular culture, the Madone is here surrounded by flowers and fragrant plants<\/strong> such as roses or lilies, whose aromas are released from the canvas to make visitors enjoy a floral journey.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Smoke Room by Peter De Cupere<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

For more than twenty years, Peter De Cupere<\/strong> has used smell as a medium for his works, performances, paintings, videos and installations. The most sought-after olfactory artist in the world, he is also very sensitive to climate change and current and threatening global issues.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Both poetic and socially critical, Smoke Room<\/em><\/strong> invites the visitor to enter this strange room while being repelled by the powerful smell of the 750,000 cigarette butts<\/strong> present in the space.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Migratory Sense by Helga Griffiths<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

As its name suggests, this work proposes an immersive and olfactory experience in relation to the memory of migrants<\/strong>; and was realized in collaboration with the perfumer Karl-Heinz Bork<\/strong>. Forced to leave their homeland and having lost all visual reference points and familiar smells, Migratory Sense<\/em><\/strong> diffuses smells and perfumes that revive memories and allow the reconstruction of the environment left by the individuals.<\/p>\n
