Explanations.<\/h4>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>All non-essential luxury items that are not used by the general public have been banned from import<\/em>,\u201d said Information Minister <strong>Marriyum Aurangzeb<\/strong>. Applicable to about 30 luxury products, this ban &#8220;<em>will allow the country to save precious foreign currency<\/em>&#8221; as stated by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Together we will overcome all the challenges with resolve and determination, InshaAllah! ?? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gIM7lqcjls\">https:\/\/t.co\/gIM7lqcjls<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Shehbaz Sharif (@CMShehbaz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CMShehbaz\/status\/1527272234494177283?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 19, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, this decision comes at a time when the <strong>local currency<\/strong>, the Pakistani rupee, has reached a <strong>historic low against the U.S. dollar<\/strong>: 200 rupees to the dollar on Thursday 19, May. <strong>Pakistan<\/strong> has been suffering for several months from crushing debt, dwindling foreign exchange reserves, high inflation and currency devaluation, and hopes to slow the economic damage by drastically reducing these imports.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cell phones<\/strong> and <strong>home appliances <\/strong>represent the largest share of imports, followed by cosmetics and jams. And it is notably the <strong>country&#8217;s elite<\/strong> (the wealthiest) who generate the most imports of luxury goods into Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 707px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/FTIk5pjaIAI5-4x?format=jpg&amp;name=900x900\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"707\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Government of Pakistan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Effective immediately, this decision will \u201c<em>give a boost to the local economy and industry<\/em>\u201d, says Marriyum Aurangzeb, before adding that \u201c<em>we can save 6 billion dollars by imposing a ban on the import of luxury items<\/em>\u201d .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I think this is a prudent move on the part of the government<\/em>\u201d, which should \u201c<em>help save much needed foreign exchange to pay off our international trade debts<\/em>\u201d, commented <strong>Khalid Tawab<\/strong>, former vice president of the Pakistan Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A month earlier, it was <strong>Nepal<\/strong>&#8216;s turn to ban the import of luxury goods to prevent the country&#8217;s foreign exchange reserves from declining, \u201c<em>due to growing deficits and high imports<\/em>,\u201d explained Nepal Rastra Bank spokesman <strong>Gunakar Bhatta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Imports of <strong>machinery, silver, ready-made garments, electrical appliances, textiles, automotive equipment, motorcycles, <\/strong>and<strong> gold<\/strong>, among others, have been banned.
