\u201cThis fact alone fills me with energy and anticipation<\/em>,\u201d says Jonathan Anderson<\/strong>, creative director of the Spanish label, looking forward to the return after a two-year hiatus of \u201cMilan Design Week<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Named \u201cWEAVE, RESTORE, RENEW<\/em><\/strong>\u201d , Anderson wanted to explore several different weaving traditions through this project: leather weaving<\/strong>, straw weaving<\/strong>, a Galician tradition known as \u201cCoroza\u201d and, finally, the Korean paper weaving<\/strong> technique known as \u201cJiseung\u201d.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n As the name suggests, this project aims to resurrect forgotten or too easily discarded objects<\/strong> and materials, transforming them into baskets, purses, cradles, vases or storage. \u201cThe act of handwork gives each object another meaning, honoring the history and value of the object and preserving it for the future,<\/em>\u201d Anderson explains. Another message he wishes to convey through this initiative is that of denouncing the acceleration of time that modern life produces, of the hectic lifestyle of contemporary society, where the usefulness of objects is only ephemeral: they are bought and used, and then directly discarded once they have done their service.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n LOEWE<\/strong> therefore wanted to highlight and pay tribute to the environmentally friendly craftsmanship <\/strong>of the artisans who create unique objects of unparalleled quality with their hands.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n For the leather weaving<\/strong> technique, the House called upon the artisans Idoia Cuesta, Bel\u00e9n Mart\u00ecnez, Santiago Basteiro and Juan Manuel Marcilla<\/strong>, to whom they donated 240 straw baskets, to be restored and repaired with leather cords.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n For traditional Galician weaving, the \u201cCoroza<\/strong>\u201d technique uses straw, reeds, heather,<\/strong> and other natural fibers to make raincoats, hats and baskets. “We’ve created a series of bags and baskets that retain Coroza’s distinctive fringe rows, which look both practical and visually stunning, almost like sculptures,” Anderson says.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Finally, the last weaving technique LOEWE wants to highlight originates in Korea<\/strong>. It uses paper<\/strong> as its main material and the house has enlisted Young Soon Lee<\/strong>, the 2019 House Craft Award finalist, to create it. This traditional technique called \u201cJiseung\u201d involves intertwining thin strings of paper<\/strong> for the purpose of creating various household objects such as pots. In this regard, Anderson noted that he has extended this technique to the use of recycled newspaper to design a series of sturdy bins.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cThroughout this project, we are celebrating the regenerative power of manual labor. I’m proud that we’ve created a series of items that rewire the relationship with time, wear and tear, delivering a message of evolution and transformation that I find progressive and uplifting<\/em>,\u201d Anderson finally says.
